Trivia
Today is the 17th anniversary of Mike Piazza‘s home run in the first game in New York after 9/11. It is a moment which will live on forever in not just baseball, but also as part of the healing process.
Certainly, no one will ever forget the home run, but how much do you really remember from that inning? Can you name all of the key players from not just he home run, but how it all transpired? Let’s find out:
Steve Karsay Matt Lawton Edgardo Alfonzo Desi Relaford Robin Ventura Tsuyoshi Shinjo Armando Benitez Javy Lopez Keith Lockhart B.J. Surhoff
With David Wright announcing his retirement, it seemed only fitting to focus on all the Mets records he holds. Can you name them all? Good luck!
With the way Zack Wheeler has pitched in the second half of the season, you can certainly see him getting some Cy Young votes. With Jacob deGrom being a favorite for the award (or at least among the leaders), we should see two Mets in the Top 10 in Cy Young voting. If this were to happen, it would mark just the fourth time in Mets history this has happened. Can you name the pitchers who received votes the other times this happened? Good luck!
Jerry Koosman Jon Matlack Tom Seaver Bob Ojeda Ron Darling Dwight Gooden Sid Fernandez Frank Viola Bret Saberhagen John Franco
With our beloved Captain on the verge of returning and playing games again, he will have an opportunity to capture one of the few records he doesn’t have – games played. Can you name the players who have played the most games in Mets history? Good luck!
Ed Kranepool David Wright Jose Reyes Bud Harrelson Jerry Grote Cleon Jones Howard Johnson Mookie Wilson Darryl Strawberry Edgardo Alfonzo Lee Mazzilli Mike Piazza Rusty Staub Rey Ordonez Daniel Murphy Wayne Garrett Keith Hernandez Carlos Beltran Todd Hundley John Stearns Kevin McReynolds Wally Backman Lucas Duda John Milner Ron Swoboda
When assessing who should win the National League Cy Young, we have heard analysts like Harold Reynolds opine Max Scherzer deserves the award over Jacob deGrom partially because Scherzer’s team has been fighting for a postseason berth while deGrom’s team is just flat out terrible. Presumably, this could mean as the season progresses Aaron Nola could surpass both pitchers as his team is fighting for the division.
While many want to believe this notion is antiquated, and maybe it is, but the history of the Cy Young voting has seemingly proved out Reynolds’ argument. So far, there have been 114 Cy Young Awards given out in baseball history. Of that 114, only 16 have been given to pitchers from losing teams. Can you name those pitchers? Good luck!
Bob Gibson Steve Carlton Gaylord Perry Randy Jones Bruce Sutter Roger Clemens Steve Bedrosian Greg Maddux Pat Hentgen Pedro Martinez Brandon Webb Tim Lincecum Zack Greinke Felix Hernandez R.A. Dickey
With Keith Hernandez weighing in on the Jose Urena/Ronald Acuna situation, we have rekindled the old school versus new school thinking. Certainly, there is the impression that throwing and hitting batters is an old and outdated way of thinking, but do the numbers and stats really prove that out. As a way to test that out, we could look at the all-time leaders in that category.
Can you name the pitchers who have hit the most batters in the modern era? Good luck!
Walter Johnson Randy Johnson Eddie Plank Tim Wakefield Joe McGinnity Charlie Hough Jim Bunning Roger Clemens Nolan Ryan Vic Willis Cy Young
This season, Brandon Nimmo has already set the Mets single season record for times hit by a pitch. That is no small task as the Mets have had a number of players who were quite adept at leaning into one to get on base. In fact, even with this bruising season, Nimmo just cracked the Mets top 20 in times hit by pitch.
Can you name the Mets who have been hit by a pitch most in franchise history? Good luck!
Lucas Duda David Wright Ron Hunt Cleon Jones Cliff Floyd Felix Millan Carlos Delgado Ruben Tejada Edgardo Alfonzo John Olerud Jeff Kent
As we saw, the Mets were not terribly active at the trade deadline. Curiously, the team either couldn’t move or didn’t want to trade assets like Jose Bautista and Devin Mesoraco. Instead, the team has held onto them and other players who have expiring deals.
Between the moves the Mets did make and the injuries, the Mets only had 14 players from the Opening Day roster on their roster after the trade deadline expired. Can you name those players? Good luck!
Jerry Blevins Jacob deGrom Jeurys Familia Robert Gsellman Matt Harvey Seth Lugo Steven Matz AJ Ramos Jacob Rhame Paul Sewald Anthony Swarzak Noah Syndergaard Kevin Plawecki Travis d’Arnaud Adrian Gonzalez Asdrubal Cabrera Todd Frazier Amed Rosario Wilmer Flores Phillip Evans Jose Reyes Juan Lagares Yoenis Cespedes Jay Bruce Brandon Nimmo
Well, unless pitcher wins still mean much more than they should, it would seem Jacob deGrom will win this year’s Cy Young Award. If that is the case, he will join a list of other Mets pitching greats who have won awards. Can you name all of the Mets pitchers who have won MLB awards? Good luck!
Tom Seaver Dwight Gooden Ron Darling Armando Benitez John Franco Jon Matlack Mike Hampton Al Leiter R.A. Dickey Matt Harvey
When the Mets starting third baseman hit the disabled list, Mets fans were clamoring for Jeff McNeil to get called-up to the majors. Instead of calling him up, the Mets informed everyone they view McNeil strictly as a second baseman. Then in pure Mets fashion, they put McNeil at third base later that week.
With the Mets not viewing McNeil as a third baseman, we should look to who they believe is capable of playing third base. In total, the Mets have had seven different players play third. Can you name them? Good luck!
Todd Frazier Jose Reyes Luis Guillorme Phillip Evans Wilmer Flores Ty Kelly Jose Bautista
