Mets Need To Replace Jared Porter As GM
Things were going so well for the New York Mets. The roster was radically revamped, and there was still the ability to do more.
The Mets had a braintrust in place underneath a front off legend in Sandy Alderson and the deepest pockets in baseball with owner Steve Cohen. This was about as far as you could get from the Jeff Wilpon led Mets.
That was before Mina Kimes and Jeff Passan of ESPN broke the story Mets GM Jared Porter sent a number of unsolicited images to a female reporter. One of those images was of a “picture of an erect, naked penis.”
It wasn’t the only explicit photo, and there were over a dozen photos sent. Purportedly, only three of the 17 were explicit, but that’s three too many. Way too many. Beyond that was an over abundance of texts from him that were largely left unanswered.
When approached for comment, Porter said the explicit images were “‘not of me. Those are like, kinda like joke-stock images.'”
Once he was made aware of the photos and text exchanges, Alderson did the required disavowal of Porter’s actions before saying the Mets will review the facts and “follow-up.”
At the moment, the Mets only course of action is to terminate Porter. This action cannot be condoned in any way.
If this is really the new Mets, they need to be clear this is going to be not just a well run organization, but also a morally in-check one. They really need to show the days of Jeff Wilpon are over.
Wife beaters like Jose Reyes are not held up as role models. Woman can get pregnant without fear of firing regardless of their marital status. Men who harass women and send unsolicited pictures of their genitalia have no place in the organization.
Keeping Porter after this is as unacceptable as it was when the Chicago Cubs looked the other way. But the Mets can’t. Not now. Not ever.
The Mets need to make it clear the Wilpon era is over in more ways than one. They’re competently run. They have the finances to operate the team like a New York team. Men who harass or abuse women have no place in the organization.
This means Jared Porter needs to be replaced, and the Mets need to do it in an expedited fashion.
My Question here is why did it not come up when he was with the Diamondbacks or before he was hired.. Was that the real reason that he left Chicago? Terminate Jared Porter As GM tomorrow morning at the latest.. Talk with Zack Scott and offer him the position possible if he does not want it Billy Owens and J.P. Ricciardi as possibility choices to have the position filled by next week
It’s because the Cubs swept it under the rug
I agree, should be fired. Has to be. There’s no way to retain him and not stain the organization under Cohen. and cause tremendous problems no matter how sorry Porter is.
Also likely that Porter lied to the Mets in the vetting process to conceal this.
This is an embarrassment to the team under new leadership, feels like continuation of the past.
It’s only a continuation if the Mets failed to act
They will, but it’s still a stain. Steve Cohen is new, but Mets history is what it is.
And this isn’t Sandy Alderson’s first rodeo with the Mets. A whole bunch of things occurred while he was there the first time. I’m not saying this Porter situation is Sandy’s fault, but Steve Cohen opted to dip into the past to hire his most senior executive. Looking in from the outside, in perception and actuality, it’s another blight, a year after hire and fire Beltran. New ownership, same problems.
Before the Mets go through the vetting process hiring the New GM. I think they need to hire a couple of women that are in the key MLB positions. the other option that they have a women involved This is thinking outside the Box is to have Steve Cohen wife included in the interviews. Also have a women IT experts in digging up these type stories from the internet. SO you can ask the individual about the story to see if this accurate One last thing is contract with a company that deals in Body language. These either part or totally should become standards in the MLB.
I think these are all good ideas
The Marlin bet us to hiring Kim NG she would have been go with new ownership. I believe there are one or two women maybe possible ready to step in as GM Jean Afterman, Raquel Ferreira, Elaine Weddington Steward, This next person is not as much Baseball Condoleezza Rice, Sandy Barbour Athletic directors at Division I schools.
It’s not so much about a GM as it is about real representation in the front office.
Time will tell about whether the Mets truly see this as a priority.
If not GM in what capacity would we be able get them to fill. From what I can tell the two organization that have promoted women highly Both the Yankees & Red Sox’s. Maybe a SR. VP GM diversity. To look at a bring women into MLB baseball organizations or something like that.
