Trivia Friday: Cy Young Winners From Losing Teams

When assessing who should win the National League Cy Young, we have heard analysts like Harold Reynolds opine Max Scherzer deserves the award over Jacob deGrom partially because Scherzer’s team has been fighting for a postseason berth while deGrom’s team is just flat out terrible.  Presumably, this could mean as the season progresses Aaron Nola could surpass both pitchers as his team is fighting for the division.

While many want to believe this notion is antiquated, and maybe it is, but the history of the Cy Young voting has seemingly proved out Reynolds’ argument.  So far, there have been 114 Cy Young Awards given out in baseball history.  Of that 114, only 16 have been given to pitchers from losing teams.  Can you name those pitchers?  Good luck!

Wow, yes Wilmer Flores has been a different player.

    Yes, yes, yes!

All or nothing uppercut, by Wilmer?
No way… this guy is going the other way and not swinging hard all the time…

    What a difference!

I believe in going for the tie at home.

Yes, I have played competitive sports and that home field advantage made a difference almost every time.

I believe in first getting a tie no matter when you are. Don’t waste chances adhering to outdated principles

    Yesterday….

    Was it seventh inning?
Was it Todd Frazier hitting a HR to close it to a one run game?

Can you play the video tape of the ABATS of :

    Kevein Plawecki
    Michael Conforto

    What a disgrace!

    1. metsdaddy says:

      Conforto had a great AB.

    Plawecki:

Like thinking is not a consideration of his ABATS ?

Lets go to the review ?

First and second – zero outs

If he is playing the tie?

Does he hit behind the runners?
or Does he upper cut it?
Does he hit the ball where it is pitched to get a fly ball to get a tag from second to third?

No, he does this Las Vegas August 2016 – open stance success story that has not translated since.

He upper cuts to pull for an extra base hit.

He does not go for the tie.

    He goes for full swing.

He grounds into a double play….

    Deflating!!!

Like thinking is not a consideration of his ABATS ? yes it appears to me that way…

    1. metsdaddy says:

Plawecki really doesn’t uppercut much. He’s a guy who more chops down on it, which is why we see him hit a lot of grounders.

  5. FIVE TOOL OWNERSHIP says:

Michael Conforto had an excellent ABAT

Yet with two strikes, on strike three:

Michael upper cuts his swing – Conforto, after a great ABAT to get to 3-2

    HE SWINGS WITH FULL POWER

If MC was playing for a tie?
With the runner on third – we just needed a soft single,,,
    Especially with two outs!

A bigger disgrace for this is Michael, not Kevin.

    1. metsdaddy says:

Judging from the AB, Conforto was definitely looking to get the ball in play somewhere. He just got beat with a very well located pitch.
