Mets Destroy Twins

This is as good as you can feel about the Mets all season with them beating up on the AL Central leading Twins.

Amed Rosario continued his torrid July with a homer off Twins starter Martin Perez. He would also start the seventh inning go-ahead rally with Dominic Smith hitting a pinch hit three run homer to give the Mets a 5-3 lead:

But that’s not the homer everyone will be talking about. Not by a long shot (pun intended). No, what everyone will focus on is Pete Alonso nearly hitting one out of Target Field in the eighth:

That was all part of a six run eighth inning where the Mets annihilated the Twins bullpen. What makes the rally all the more impressive was the Mets scored all six of those runs with two outs.

Aside from the Alonso monster shot, there was a Jeff McNeil RBI double and another Smith RBI base hit.

This was a big development not just because of the win, but also because it solved a real bullpen issue.

After Jason Vargas pitched six innings, Jeurys Familia pitched a scoreless seventh. It was the best he’s looked all year pumping in 99 MPH sinkers.

With the Mets up 11-3 instead of 5-3, they could go to Chris Mazza to eat up the final two innings instead of pressing their top bullpen arms into service after having been worked a good amount since the All Star Break.

This led to the Twins bringing in a position player, Ehire Adrianza, to pitch the ninth. The Mets added three more highlighted by a Rosario two RBI triple. On the play, Jake Cave dove and missed the sinking liner. Even with Rosario trucking, Gary Disarcina was no fun holding up Rosario at third instead of letting him try for the inside the park homer.

When all was said and done, the Mets won 14-4. Suddenly, the Mets have won four in a row, and they are showing signs of life. Their best players are starting to play like it, and the bullpen has been great. Now, they have 20 straight against teams with a losing record. Maybe it’s time to start believing.

Game Notes: Wilmer Font was traded to the Blue Jays for cash considerations.

Hard to believe the Twins had a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning today. Thank you Eddie Rosario for dropping the ball otherwise that dumb bastard Callaway was gonna bring in Lugo for the fourth time in five days the guy with a torn ucl and also the guy who went on the injured list with a shoulder injury just six weeks ago, my god.

Speaking of guys with the name Rosario it looks like Amed is breaking out big time he looks like Reyes looked in June and July of ‘06 when Jose broke out. Amed had easily the best game of his career and is just clobbering the ball as Fran Healy would say and if Amed becomes a big time player that’s another core young position player to go along with Alonso, McNeil, Conforto, and hopefully Dom and Nimmo. Speaking of Dom that’s a hell of a way to be break out of a slump.

I would believe statcast if they had Alonso’s homer going over 500 feet holy crap what a bomb. Oh and nice start by Vargas.

Hech had maybe his best game of his career but who gives a f*** about him?

The hope with Hechavarria is he’s getting some trade value. What that would be is nothing, but I guess the Mets keep playing him to try to get a better nothing.

—Great to see a laugher, particularly against a good team. Alonso’s HR to the 3rd deck-that doesn’t happen often.

—It’s worth noting that from June 26 through July 16th Rosario’s OPS is barely over .700, at .702.
The jury not only continues to remain out on the Mets SS, it went to dinner and is planning a double-feature after.
We’ve been here before, as his rolling 15 day averages for any stat one cares to name attest.
He’s going to have to keep this up for a couple of months for it to mean anything at all.

—The FO appears to have forgotten that Wheeler is not a 6+ inning starter. That he hit the IL is no surprise, and the team may have wrecked its chance to get real value for him. Wheeler doesn’t deserve that, we don’t deserve that, but this FO does. Imagine a pitcher with real arm issues who was pointlessly stretched last year in a lost season, and that now in another lost season they have leading the team in IP. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

—The Mets have 20 games against sub-.500 teams following tomorrow’s game against the Twins. Forget contention. It will be interesting to see if they can just pretend to respectability in that time.

Mets do have to first get to pretend respectability before they can consider contention. That said, things are wide open.

Well, if by wide open we mean they could grab the tiger by the tail and actually win 78 this season, then absolutely.

For a team with no reinforcements coming, no good starting pitcher currently healthy other than deGrom and maybe Syndergaard (with his 4.55 ERA), only 2 position players headed for more than 3 WAR on the season, and a bullpen among the worst in the majors, there’s nowhere to go. Nowhere good, anyway.

Mets are five back in the Wild Card race (four in the loss column). Their bullpen is now healthy and much improved. Most of their players are better second half performers. They have a very favorable schedule to do this.

Most are discounting the chances too much.
